Short answer: a dress watch is slim with a leather strap or fine bracelet, a sport watch has a larger case, a rubber strap and higher water resistance, and an everyday watch sits between them on a steel bracelet. Pick by where you will wear it most.
Dress
Slim case, simple dial, leather strap or a fine steel bracelet. It slides under a shirt cuff. In the shop: the Lacoste Catherine, a small rectangular steel case on a steel bracelet.
Sport
Larger case, rubber strap, higher water resistance. Water resistance is shown in ATM on every product page; a higher number handles more water, and the brand's own guide says what each rating allows. In the shop: the Lacoste Capbreton and L 12.12 Scuba, both 43 mm on rubber, rated 10 ATM.
Everyday
A steel bracelet that takes daily wear, a case around the middle of the range, a dial that goes with most clothes. In the shop: the Lacoste Boston, 42 mm on a bracelet, rated 5 ATM.
